12 Cozy Patio Ideas for Fall and Winter

Most patios are abandoned in October, right when the evenings are at their best. Keeping one usable through the cold months takes four things, in this order: a heat source, protection from wind, warm light and something soft to sit on. Get the first two right and the rest is decoration.

1. Add a fire pit as the center

Fire gives heat, light and a reason to stay outside. Smokeless wood-burning pits use a double wall to burn off most of the smoke, which matters on a small patio near the house. Place it on stone or pavers, at least 10 feet from walls and fences, and check local burning rules.

2. Or choose a propane fire table

No smoke, no ash, on and off with a knob. A fire table also works as a coffee table with the lid on. It gives less heat than a wood fire but can be used on wooden decks, following the maker's clearances.

3. Use a patio heater where fire is not allowed

A freestanding propane heater warms a circle of about 15 feet across. A pyramid flame heater looks better; a mushroom-top heater gives more warmth. Both need open air and overhead clearance.

4. Electric infrared heater for covered spaces

Under a roof, on a balcony or in a gazebo, an electric infrared heater is the safe choice. It heats people and furniture, not the air, so wind steals less of it. Wall-mounted models keep the floor clear.

5. Block the wind

Wind makes 55 degrees feel like 40. Outdoor curtains on a pergola, a clear vinyl side panel or a solid privacy screen on the windward side is worth more than a second heater.

6. Lay a thicker rug

A rug stops cold coming up from stone or concrete. In fall, swap a thin summer rug for a heavier outdoor one, or layer two.

7. Bring out blankets that can handle damp

Wool blends and fleece-lined outdoor throws stay warm when the air is damp. Keep them in a basket by the door or a deck box so they are within reach.

8. Switch to deeper cushions

Thin summer pads are cold to sit on. Deep seat cushions with thick foam make metal and wicker furniture usable in the cold. Store them dry between uses.

9. Change the lighting to warm and low

It gets dark early, so lighting matters more than in summer. Warm white string lights overhead plus lanterns at floor level are enough. Solar lights charge poorly in winter; choose plug-in or rechargeable ones.

10. Add a heated seat

Heated cushions and heated throws that run on a USB battery put warmth exactly where you need it and use very little power. They are the best low-cost upgrade for a balcony where heaters are not allowed.

11. Plant for the cold season

Empty pots make a patio look closed for winter. Refill them with ornamental cabbage, heather, pansies, evergreen grasses and small conifers. In fall, pumpkins and mums give instant color.

12. Protect what you are not using

Furniture covers keep cushions and frames dry, so the patio is ready in two minutes on a good evening. Fitted covers with vents and buckles stay on in wind.
